Curious to see how closely the food resembled what we had enjoyed in Madurai, we decided to stop by for dinner.
Located conveniently along the National Highway at Chandranagar, Aha Bun Parotta is an easy stop for travellers passing through Palakkad. The restaurant focuses on Madurai-inspired dishes such as Bun Parotta, Kari Dosa, Veechu Parotta, Kalakki, Ghee Mutton Chukka, and several other favourites that have become popular across Tamil Nadu.
Why Visit Aha Bun Parotta for Bun Parotta in Palakkad?
The biggest attraction here is the opportunity to enjoy several well-known Tamil Nadu street food dishes in one place. Instead of offering only Bun Parotta, the menu includes a variety of specialities that are usually associated with Madurai’s vibrant evening food scene.
During our visit, we tried Bun Parotta, Veechu Parotta, Ghee Mutton Chukka, Mutton Brain Roast, and Kalakki. Among everything we tasted, the Ghee Mutton Chukka stood out as our favourite. The mutton was tender, flavourful, and well coated with spices without becoming overwhelmingly oily. The Mutton Brain Roast was equally enjoyable, while the soft and creamy Kalakki complemented the meal beautifully.

Naturally, we were particularly interested in the Bun Parotta in Palakkad, having enjoyed the original version in Madurai. The Bun Parotta served here was good and satisfying, but it wasn’t quite as crispy and flaky as the versions commonly found on the streets of Madurai. On the positive side, it also felt noticeably less oily, which many diners may actually prefer.
The same was true for the curries. They carried the unmistakable influence of Tamil Nadu cuisine but weren’t as intensely spicy as what you’d typically find in Madurai. Rather than trying to replicate Madurai street food exactly, Aha Bun Parotta seems to have created its own style by blending Tamil Nadu flavours with a profile that’s likely to appeal to local tastes in Kerala.

For us, that’s the best way to approach this restaurant. Instead of comparing every dish directly with what you’ll find in Madurai, visit with the expectation of enjoying a Tamil Nadu-inspired meal prepared with its own local identity.
