The Best Toddy Shop in Palakkad: When someone mentions a Kerala toddy shop, most of us picture a rustic dining space, fiery curries, and traditional village-style food. That’s exactly what we expected when we drove through the beautiful countryside of Kollengode in Palakkad. Instead, Kalavara Toddy Shop surprised us in the best possible way.
Nestled amidst the scenic landscapes of Kollengode, with the majestic Nelliyampathy Hills in the background and endless paddy fields stretching across the countryside, Kalavara offers a dining experience that’s quite different from what most people associate with a traditional kallu shappu. If you’re searching for the best toddy shop in Palakkad, this is one place that certainly deserves your attention—not just because of the food, but because of the overall experience.
What Makes Kalavara One of the Best Toddy Shops in Palakkad?
Every toddy shop has its own identity, and Kalavara has built its reputation differently.
Rather than relying only on spicy curries and rustic charm, this restaurant has created an atmosphere that is clean, comfortable, and welcoming for families. The dining area is spacious, beautifully maintained, and thoughtfully designed, making it one of the most pleasant toddy shop environments we’ve experienced in Kerala.
The food also reflects this approach. Unlike many traditional toddy shops where almost every dish is intensely spicy, the dishes here are moderately seasoned without compromising on flavour. In addition to classic toddy shop favourites, the menu also features innovative platters and fusion-inspired dishes that add a refreshing twist to the dining experience.
It’s this balance between authentic Kerala flavours and modern presentation that makes many visitors consider Kalavara among the best toddy shops in Palakkad.

What We Tried
The highlight of our meal was undoubtedly the combination of Kappa and Vatta Curry.
The soft mashed cassava paired beautifully with the rich and flavourful Vatta Curry, creating one of those simple combinations that leave a lasting impression. If you visit what many consider the best toddy shop in Palakkad, this is one dish we would happily recommend without a second thought.
We also ordered the restaurant’s popular Non-Veg Platter, priced at ₹1,600. It included an impressive assortment of seafood, chicken, beef, and other traditional accompaniments. The quantity was generous enough that the two of us couldn’t finish it comfortably. In our opinion, three people can easily share the platter, making it an excellent choice for families or groups visiting together.

Another dish we thoroughly enjoyed was the Ayala Curry. Like the Vatta Curry, it complemented the meals perfectly and reflected the restaurant’s preference for balanced flavours over excessive spice.
The only disappointment during our visit was the Kalanji Fry. When we saw it on the menu, we expected the wild-caught sea fish commonly known as Asian Seabass or Barramundi. Instead, it turned out to be farm-raised Kalanji. While the preparation itself was enjoyable, it simply didn’t match the expectation we had before ordering.
Fortunately, that was only a small part of an otherwise memorable meal. The quality of the food, the peaceful ambience, and the attention to cleanliness easily outweighed this minor disappointment.
More Than Just a Toddy Shop
One reason Kalavara stands apart is that it doesn’t feel like a conventional toddy shop.
Whether you’re travelling through Palakkad with family or introducing someone to Kerala’s toddy shop culture for the first time, this restaurant offers a comfortable environment where everyone can enjoy the experience. It’s easy to understand why some travellers describe it as a modern toddy shop in Palakkad, while others appreciate it as one of the cleanest toddy shops in Kerala.
The scenic surroundings of Kollengode further enhance the experience. After enjoying a leisurely lunch, you can continue exploring one of Palakkad’s most beautiful regions, known for its lush paddy fields and the stunning backdrop of the Nelliyampathy hills.
