Before heading to the restaurant, we stopped by one of these vast paddy fields to capture a few visuals. The cool breeze, lush greenery and tranquil surroundings made it a perfect start to our journey. But our destination for the day wasn’t the paddy fields—it was the much-talked-about Palakkad Wedding Biriyani waiting for us in Kollengode town.
Chali Annante Biriyani Kada – A Small Restaurant with a Big Name
As we reached Chali Annante Biriyani Kada, breakfast service was still underway. The little restaurant was buzzing with activity. Several customers were enjoying plates of hot parotta and beef fry, while others patiently waited for the day’s first serving of Rawther Biriyani.

We stepped inside just as Chali Annan’s wife was preparing the day’s Palakkad Wedding Biriyani. Watching the entire process unfold was fascinating. The rice, spices and chicken came together effortlessly, guided by years of experience rather than written recipes. The aroma slowly filled the tiny kitchen, making it impossible not to feel hungry.
This style of Rawther Biriyani is quite different from many other biriyanis found across Kerala. The colour has a slightly reddish tint, which is why many locals fondly call it the Red Biriyani. The masalas are balanced beautifully, allowing the flavours of the rice and chicken to shine without becoming overly spicy.
Our Experience with Chali Annante Biryani
Nearly a year ago, we had visited the famous NMR Biriyani in Palakkad town. As soon as we saw this biriyani, it reminded us of that same traditional style. However, after the first few bites, we realised that Chali Annante Biryani has its own identity.
The biriyani was served on a fresh banana leaf, making the experience feel even more authentic. I enjoyed the meal along with my friend Nikhil and his father, and we loved every bite. The chicken was cooked beautifully, the rice was aromatic, and every mouthful had a comforting homemade flavour. It followed the same traditional Rawther style but carried a slightly different shade and character, making it another wonderful example of the beloved Palakkad Wedding Biriyani.
