One Bite of This Parotta Took Me Back in Time – Anand Hotel, Pala

Some food experiences instantly transport you back to simpler times. A familiar aroma, a perfectly cooked dish, or a combination that reminds you of countless breakfasts from childhood. That was exactly how I felt when I tasted the parotta and beef curry at Anand Hotel Pala (in Koodallur).

We visited Anand Hotel in April 2026 after hearing about their traditional Kerala breakfast and beef dishes. Small local restaurants like this often serve some of the most authentic food, and I was curious to see if Anand Hotel lived up to its reputation.

We reached the restaurant early in the morning while breakfast preparations were still in full swing. The kitchen was buzzing with activity as fresh batches of parotta were being prepared alongside beef curry, beef roast, fish curry, and other breakfast favourites. The aroma coming from the kitchen itself was enough to make us hungry.

One of the things I enjoy during such visits is watching the food being prepared. There is something special about seeing experienced cooks effortlessly prepare dishes that have remained unchanged for decades. At Anand Hotel, the focus was clearly on traditional flavours rather than modern presentation.

Since this was our first visit, we decided to try a variety of dishes. Our table soon filled with parotta, appam, idiyappam, puttu, beef curry, beef roast, mutta roast, kadala curry, veg kuruma, tea, and lime tea.

The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the parotta and beef curry combination. The parotta was soft, beautifully layered, and flaky without being greasy. The beef curry carried the kind of flavour that instantly reminded me of old Kerala hotel breakfasts. It wasn’t overly spicy or complicated. Instead, it delivered the comforting taste that many Malayalis associate with traditional naadan food.

The beef roast was another standout dish. The pieces were tender and coated with a rich blend of spices that paired perfectly with both parotta and appam. The appam, idiyappam, and puttu were fresh and well prepared, while the kadala curry and veg kuruma offered excellent vegetarian options.

What impressed me most about Anand Hotel was its simplicity. There are no fancy interiors, elaborate décor, or social media-friendly presentations. The restaurant focuses on serving honest Kerala food at affordable prices, and that is exactly what makes it special.
