A Day of Clam Collecting, Fishing & Backwater Adventures at Vaikom Fish Farm

Some places offer more than just good food—they offer memories, experiences, and stories that stay with you long after the trip. Our visit to Vaikom Fish Farm & Aqua Tourism during my daughters’ summer vacation was one such experience.

We started early from Kochi and reached the farm, located near Attara Bridge in Vaikom, around 6:30 in the morning. Joining me on this trip were my wife Kalpita, our daughters Keya and Keyara, Keya’s friends Hadia and Rithika, and my friend Abhilash. The cool morning breeze and the peaceful surroundings of the farm immediately set the tone for a memorable day.

As soon as we arrived, the farm staff informed us that clams had arrived in the farm and visitors could enter the shallow waters to collect them. Without any hesitation, I joined the kids and stepped into the farm to search for clams. Before long, we had collected enough freshwater clams to prepare a delicious kakka fry for lunch.

The fish farm, managed by Anila and her team, is known for cultivating Tilapia and Kerala’s beloved Karimeen (Pearlspot). After our clam-hunting adventure, we decided to try our luck at fishing. The farm has plenty of fish, making it a great place even for beginners. The highlight of the session was watching Rithika and Keyara successfully catch Tilapia from the farm. The excitement on their faces made the experience even more special.

After freshening up using the basic facilities available on the farm, we sat down for breakfast, which had been pre-booked as part of our package. If you’re planning a visit and would like breakfast included, it’s best to arrange it in advance while making your reservation.

While Kalpita and the kids enjoyed some of the activities and games available on the property, I spent some time with the restaurant team watching the preparation of our freshly collected clams and Karimeen. There is something special about watching ingredients move directly from farm to kitchen before reaching your plate.

Visitors can also enjoy activities such as canoeing and coracle boating within the farm. My family particularly enjoyed the coracle ride, which turned out to be one of the highlights of the day. By lunchtime, we were rewarded with a fantastic spread that included Karimeen cooked in tender coconut gravy, crispy clam fry, fish curry, fish fry, and several other local dishes prepared using the farm’s fresh catch.

Although lunch left us pleasantly tired, the day wasn’t over yet. Before heading back, we opted for a Shikara ride through the backwaters surrounding Vaikom. The boatman guided us through quiet canals and lesser-known backwater villages, offering a glimpse into a side of Kerala that many travellers never get to see.
