We Went for the Dosa, But Everyone Told Us to Try the Idli

Kochi has no shortage of street food spots. From late-night thattukadas to small tea shops hidden inside busy streets, the city is full of places that locals swear by. One such place is Murugante Thattukada on Stadium Link Road, Kaloor.

Our video at Murugante Thattukada in Kochi

When we visited Murugante Thattukada, we had only one thing in mind—to find out whether their famous dosa and mutta dosa were really worth the popularity they enjoy among Kochi food lovers.

As evening approached, the small roadside eatery slowly started filling up with customers. Some came for a quick snack, while others seemed to be regulars who knew exactly what they wanted. The aroma of freshly prepared dosas, omelettes, and snacks filled the air as the kitchen team worked continuously to keep up with the demand.

Naturally, we ordered their much-talked-about Mutta Dosa. Crispy around the edges and topped with egg, it was simple, filling, and satisfying. We also tried the regular dosa, double omelette, and a few snacks. There was nothing fancy about the food, but that is often the charm of a good thattukada. The focus here is on taste, consistency, and affordability.

What stood out to me was how places like this continue to survive and thrive despite the arrival of modern cafés and restaurants. Murugante Thattukada has built a loyal customer base simply by serving honest food at reasonable prices.

After our meal, we walked over to a nearby tea stall run by an elderly couple. A glass of hot kattan chaya and some traditional snacks provided the perfect ending to the evening. Sometimes, experiences like these become more memorable than the food itself.

Interestingly, the story didn’t end when we left the restaurant.

After publishing our video, hundreds of viewers shared their thoughts in the comments. While many appreciated the dosa and mutta dosa, there was one thing that kept appearing again and again.

“Why didn’t you try the idli?”

Several viewers insisted that Murugante Thattukada’s real speciality is not the dosa but the soft idli served with their chutneys. Many even claimed that the idli and chutney combination is the reason they keep returning to this small food spot.

Honestly, we had no idea.

And that is one of the reasons I enjoy creating food content. Every video becomes a conversation. Sometimes the viewers know the place better than we do. Their suggestions often reveal hidden favourites that first-time visitors can easily miss.

So while our visit focused on the dosa, mutta dosa, omelette, and snacks, it looks like we may need another visit to Murugante Thattukada—this time for the idli and chutneys that so many people passionately recommended.

FoodNTravel Verdict

Murugante Thattukada is one of those places that reminds us why Kerala’s roadside food culture remains special. The dosa, mutta dosa, and omelette made for a satisfying evening meal, but if the comments from our viewers are anything to go by, we may have missed the restaurant’s biggest star—the idli and chutneys.

Looks like another visit is already overdue.
