Whenever I travel through Kozhikode district, one question often comes up among food lovers: “Where can I find the best pork near Calicut?”
While there are plenty of restaurants serving Malabar cuisine, finding a place known specifically for traditional pork dishes is not always easy. During one of our food explorations in Kozhikode district, we decided to search for exactly that.
The search eventually led us to Kodenchery, a beautiful region located near the famous Thusharagiri waterfalls.
Before heading to our food destination, we made a stop at Chali Puzha, the venue of the internationally known Malabar River Festival. Known for its thrilling white-water rafting events, the river and its surrounding landscape offered a refreshing break from the journey. The combination of flowing water, greenery, and the peaceful atmosphere reminded us why this part of Kozhikode district attracts both adventure seekers and nature lovers.
After spending some time by the river and interacting with local residents, we continued towards our main destination — Bijuvettante Food Paradise, also known locally as Relax Hotel.
What makes this place unique is that it doesn’t operate like a typical restaurant.
Is it Really the Best Pork Near Calicut?
Many of the dishes served here are prepared at Bijuvettan’s home before being brought to the restaurant. This creates an experience that feels much closer to visiting someone’s home for lunch than dining at a commercial establishment.
Before the meal, we got an opportunity to visit Bijuvettan’s kitchen and watch part of the cooking process. Seeing the pork fry and beef roast being prepared added another dimension to the experience. There is always something special about understanding how a dish is made before tasting it.
Soon, our table was filled with some of the restaurant’s most popular items.
The pork fry was undoubtedly the highlight.
Prepared in traditional Kerala style, the pork carried deep flavours, a satisfying balance of spices, and the kind of texture that only comes from careful cooking. Every bite paired beautifully with the accompanying kappa.
The beef roast was equally impressive. Rich, flavourful, and packed with traditional Malabar character, it held its own even alongside the excellent pork dishes.
To complete the meal, we enjoyed soft kallu appam, which worked perfectly with both the pork and beef preparations.
What impressed me most was the authenticity of the food. Nothing felt commercialised or overly polished. Instead, the meal reflected the flavours that many Malayalis associate with home-cooked food and village-style cooking traditions.
