One of the biggest surprises during our journey was the Sheep Research Centre at Mannavanur. While many travellers drive past without stopping, I would strongly recommend taking a few minutes to enjoy this beautiful location.

Large open grasslands stretch across the hills, creating a landscape that feels completely different from the dense forests around Kodaikanal town. During our visit, hundreds of sheep were grazing peacefully across the meadows while the surrounding hills disappeared into drifting clouds. Watching them move slowly across the fields created one of the most memorable scenes of the entire trip.

What I appreciated most was the simplicity of the experience. There are no amusement rides, souvenir shops, or commercial distractions here. There are no boating queues, amusement rides, or large crowds—just a calm lake surrounded by forests and rolling hills.

The drive itself is equally memorable. Mist drifts across the road, birds call from the surrounding trees, and every few kilometres reveal another beautiful valley. Unlike many tourist destinations that have become commercialised, Poombarai still retains its traditional character. Narrow village roads, friendly local people, colourful houses, and breathtaking mountain views create an atmosphere that’s both peaceful and authentic.

One of the village’s important landmarks is the Kuzhanthai Velappar Temple, a centuries-old Murugan temple that attracts devotees from across Tamil Nadu. Even if you’re not visiting for religious reasons, the temple’s location and the surrounding views are worth experiencing.

One of our favourite memories from Poombarai was surprisingly simple. We stopped at a small roadside tea shop, ordered a hot cup of tea, and spent a few quiet minutes watching village life unfold around us. The landscaped surroundings and viewing platforms make it a comfortable place for families to spend some time before continuing towards the nearby attractions.

Guna Caves – Mystery Beneath the Forest

Originally known as Devil’s Kitchen, Guna Caves became famous after the Tamil film Guna, starring Kamal Haasan. Although visitors are no longer allowed inside the deep caves for safety reasons, the surrounding forest itself is an attraction worth visiting.

What fascinated me most wasn’t the cave—it was the enormous tree roots spreading across the forest floor. Some of them twist above the ground like giant natural sculptures, creating a landscape unlike anywhere else in South India. Walking through these ancient trees gives the entire area a mysterious atmosphere, especially when mist begins drifting through the forest.

During our visit, the weather kept changing every few minutes. Thick clouds rolled across the valley, completely hiding the towering rock pillars before slowly drifting away to reveal them again. Watching this natural performance became one of our favourite memories of the trip.
