Non-Veg Meals Near Coimbatore: Coimbatore is surrounded by countless restaurants, but some of the most memorable food experiences are found a little outside the city. During our journey through Coimbatore in June 2026, our friend Fabin suggested taking a small detour to Ganeshpuram to visit Amma Mess, a restaurant well known among locals for its authentic Tamil Nadu cuisine.
Our original plan was to try their famous Sunday breakfast, where soft idlis are served with a variety of non-vegetarian curries. Unfortunately, we weren’t visiting on a Sunday. Instead, we discovered something equally satisfying—a wholesome spread of non-veg meals near Coimbatore, accompanied by an impressive selection of traditional Tamil Nadu mutton and chicken dishes.
Why is Amma Mess Popular for Non-Veg Meals Near Coimbatore?
At first glance, Amma Mess looks like a simple roadside restaurant. It isn’t a luxury dining destination, nor does it try to impress with elaborate interiors. People visit for one reason—the food.
The basic meal itself is quite simple, consisting of rice with accompaniments. What transforms it into a memorable non-veg meal near Coimbatore is the wide range of authentic Tamil Nadu side dishes that can be ordered alongside.

During our visit, we found specialties such as Mutton Head Curry, Mutton Ney Chukka (Ghee Chukka), Mutton Kudal Curry, Mutton Raktha Poriyal, Chicken Chettinad, Chicken Pallipalayam, and Chicken Ghee Roast. These dishes reflect the bold and distinctive flavours of Tamil Nadu rather than the coconut-rich gravies commonly found in Kerala.
Among everything we tasted, two dishes stood out. The Mutton Head Curry was rich, flavourful, and deeply satisfying, while the Mutton Ney Chukka impressed us with its beautifully roasted spices and aromatic ghee. Both are highly recommended if you’re visiting Amma Mess for the first time.
Some dishes may be unfamiliar to travellers from Kerala. Mutton Kudal Curry, prepared using mutton intestines, and Mutton Raktha Poriyal, made with cooked mutton blood, aren’t commonly served in Kerala restaurants. While these traditional preparations may not appeal to everyone, they offer an authentic glimpse into Tamil Nadu’s regional cuisine and are worth trying if you’re interested in exploring local flavours.
Another aspect we enjoyed was the meal itself. Instead of serving only vegetarian gravies alongside the rice, Amma Mess offers non-vegetarian gravies, making the meal even more satisfying. Their rasam deserves a special mention—it was wonderfully balanced and one of the best parts of the lunch. To finish, we were served thick homemade curd with a creamy consistency that could almost be scooped like ice cream, providing the perfect ending to a hearty Tamil meal.
