Whenever people talk about seafood in Alappuzha, the conversation usually revolves around expensive waterfront restaurants, toddy shops, and tourist-friendly seafood platters. But like our usual explorations, I was more interested in finding a place where locals enjoy their seafood lunch. That search brought us to Aravala Restaurant Alappuzha.
Aravala Restaurant Alappuzha has multiple branches in the city, but we visited the one near to the Collectorate in Alappuzha.
Known among locals for its traditional Kerala seafood preparations and lunch meals, Aravala has built a reputation for serving fresh seafood without unnecessary frills. Naturally, we were curious to see if it lived up to the hype.
As lunchtime approached, the restaurant quickly filled with diners. The menu featured a tempting variety of seafood dishes ranging from fish curries and fish fry to prawns, squid, fish eggs, and seasonal specialities. After some discussion, we decided to try a combination of their most popular dishes.
The stars of our meal turned out to be the Kalanji Fish Head Curry and Kalanji Tawa Fry.
The fish head curry was packed with flavour and carried the kind of depth that only comes from traditional Kerala-style cooking. For seafood lovers, fish head curries often offer some of the most intense flavours, and this one certainly delivered.
The Kalanji Tawa Fry was equally impressive. Fresh, well-seasoned, and perfectly cooked, it quickly became the highlight of the table. In fact, it ended up stealing the spotlight from some of the other dishes we ordered.
We also tried Fish Egg Fry, Chemmeen Roast, Koonthal, Beef Koorka, and Meals. The Fish Egg Fry was particularly enjoyable and added another dimension to the seafood experience. The Chemmeen Roast offered a satisfying balance of spice and flavour, while the Koonthal paired beautifully with the meals.
Interestingly, while the Beef Koorka was good, I found myself repeatedly going back to the seafood dishes. When the seafood is this good, even a well-prepared beef dish can struggle to compete for attention.
The meals provided the perfect base for exploring the various curries and side dishes. Served in the traditional Kerala style, they complemented the seafood rather than overpowering it.
