We Went Looking for Windmills, But Ramakkalmedu Gave Us Much More

Whenever I hear the name Ramakkalmedu, the first thing that comes to mind is wind. Located on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border in Idukki district, Ramakkalmedu is often described as one of the windiest places in South India. Naturally, I expected giant windmills spinning furiously in the strong winds. Ironically, when we visited, many of the windmills stood still, leaving me wondering why they weren’t rotating despite the powerful breeze all around us. Here’s a list of things to do in Ramakalmedu.

What started as a simple trip to see Ramakkalmedu soon turned into one of the most memorable travel experiences we’ve had in Kerala.

Our journey began from Vandanmedu, where we checked into Spices Lap Resort. Surrounded by greenery and mist-covered hills, the resort served as a perfect base for exploring the region. After settling in, we set out to discover one of Ramakkalmedu’s lesser-known attractions — Ama Para.

Ama Para is not your typical tourist destination. Reaching the viewpoint itself is an adventure, requiring an off-road jeep ride through rugged terrain. The excitement of the journey is rewarded with spectacular views, unusual turtle-shaped rock formations, hidden caves, rolling hills, and a landscape that feels untouched by mass tourism.

Standing on top of Ama Para, surrounded by mist, strong winds, and panoramic mountain views, it was easy to understand why this place remains one of Kerala’s hidden gems. The combination of adventure and scenery makes it a must-visit for travellers looking to explore beyond the usual tourist spots.

From Ama Para, we continued towards the famous Ramakkalmedu View Point. On a clear day, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the plains of Tamil Nadu, including parts of Cumbum and Theni. Even though clouds and drizzle occasionally interrupted our views, they added a magical atmosphere to the experience.

We also visited several well-known attractions in the area, including the Sree Rama-Seetha Devi Temple, the iconic Kuravan Kurathi Statue Park, and the windmill farms that have become synonymous with Ramakkalmedu. The cool climate, drifting clouds, and endless mountain views made every stop along the route worthwhile.

No Kerala road trip is complete without good food. During our journey, we stopped near Thookkupaalam for local food before returning to the resort later in the day, where we enjoyed a delicious serving of Dindigul Biryani. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and adventure. However, to complete our list of Things to do in Ramakkalmedu, we also visited windmill farms. However, the windmills stood still, even though the place was so attractive.

If you’re looking for a destination that combines scenic beauty, adventure, off-road experiences, viewpoints, and a refreshing mountain climate, Ramakkalmedu deserves a place on your Kerala travel bucket list. While the windmills may or may not be spinning when you visit, the landscapes, viewpoints, and hidden experiences around Ramakkalmedu are more than enough to make the journey worthwhile. Note: Enjoying Dindigul Biryani is not a primary focus in our things to do in Ramakkalmedu. We enjoyed it at our resort as the chef was good in preparing Dindigul Biryani.
