Sri Lankan Hospitality: During our road trip across Sri Lanka, we enjoyed everything from bustling street food markets and village kitchens to some of the country’s most celebrated restaurants. Every meal introduced us to new flavours, new ingredients, and new stories. Yet, when we look back on the journey, the meal that remains closest to our hearts wasn’t served in a famous restaurant or recommended by a travel guide.
It was served in the modest home of a family who welcomed us not as tourists, but as friends.
For most of our journey across Sri Lanka, Priyan chettan travelled with us, sharing stories about his country, introducing us to local customs, and making sure we experienced Sri Lanka beyond the usual tourist attractions. Somewhere along the journey, he smiled and said, “Before you leave Sri Lanka, you must come home for a meal.”
It wasn’t a commercial experience or something arranged for visitors. It was a simple invitation from someone who wanted us to meet his family and enjoy a meal prepared the way they would cook it for themselves.
Without hesitation, we accepted.
Looking back, that single invitation gave us one of the most authentic experiences of our entire Sri Lankan journey. More than the recipes or the flavours, it was the warmth, generosity, and kindness of the people that truly defined Sri Lankan hospitality.
A Visit That Began at the Local Fish Market
Like many home-cooked meals, ours began not in the kitchen but at the neighbourhood fish market.
On the way to Priyan chettan’s village, we stopped at a small roadside fish stall where the day’s fresh catch was neatly displayed. Unlike large seafood markets bustling with tourists, this was the kind of place where local families came to buy fish for their daily meals.

After looking through the selection, we chose a fresh barracuda, which the fish seller expertly cleaned and cut into curry pieces right there in front of us. Along with the fish, we picked up fresh chicken and a few vegetables before continuing our drive.
It was a simple errand, but one that immediately made us feel less like visitors and more like guests preparing for a family gathering. Instead of arriving with empty hands, we were bringing the main ingredients for a meal that we would soon share together.
The drive itself was equally memorable. Passing quiet villages, lush greenery, and peaceful countryside, we found ourselves leaving behind the busy tourist routes and entering everyday Sri Lankan life. It was a side of the country that travellers rarely experience, yet one that often leaves the deepest impression.
A Home That Felt Surprisingly Familiar
As we reached the village, it instantly reminded us of rural Kerala. Coconut palms, banana plants, cassava growing in the yard, and a simple village home created a familiar feeling. It was the kind of place where life moved at a relaxed pace.
Darshini chechi welcomed us with a warm smile that immediately made us feel comfortable. Although it was our first visit, the hospitality made it feel like we were visiting relatives rather than meeting someone for the first time.
A Simple Meal, Cooked with Love
While we chatted with Priyan chettan, Darshini chechi began preparing lunch using traditional Sri Lankan cooking methods, with part of the cooking done over a wood-fired stove. She transformed the fish and chicken we had brought into a delicious home-style meal, accompanied by a few simple side dishes.

The flavours were noticeably different from what we’re used to in Kerala. Their curries are prepared differently, allowing the spices and ingredients to create a distinct taste. Yet everything was comforting and delicious in its own way. Among the dishes, I particularly enjoyed the taro curry and the spinach preparation, which reminded me of our own cheera thoran, despite using a different variety of greens.
More than the recipes, it was the care and affection that went into preparing the meal that made it special.
More Than Just a Meal
As travellers, we often remember the famous attractions and beautiful landscapes. But sometimes, the moments that stay with us the longest are the quiet ones—sharing conversations around a dining table, learning about another family’s way of life, and feeling genuinely welcomed into their home.
Our afternoon with Priyan chettan and Darshini chechi wasn’t just about tasting traditional Sri Lankan food. It was about experiencing Sri Lankan hospitality in its purest form.
Final Thoughts
As we left Priyan chettan’s home that evening, we carried with us much more than the memory of a delicious meal. We left with grateful hearts, new friendships, and a beautiful reminder that the best travel experiences are often created by the kindness of ordinary people. For us, this simple lunch became one of the most unforgettable moments of our journey through Sri Lanka.
