Are you a strict vegetarian? A person who takes only vegetarian food, but somewhere deep within your heart, do you have a feeling to know what it’s like to taste non-vegetarian dishes, especially beef recipes? Or if you are a non-vegetarian who would like to taste a few beef recipes fully made of vegetables? Now you won’t have to ponder about these things anymore and get to Cherthala in the Alappuzha district. Vinod Cafe in Cherthala presents you with exactly what you have thought for. This small foot spot by the side of the road serves you delicious vegan beef roast and lips-smacking vegan beef stew without using any meat.
We were on our way from Ernakulam by the national highway and took an inroad in Cherthala town to reach the Vinod Cafe. It’s a famous Konkani restaurant known for its vegetarian dishes and it’s been open for decades. Apparently, the food spot has been working since 1966 and it has a long and rich history to lean onto.
It’s a strictly vegetarian restaurant and I came to know an intriguing fact that we get beef recipes in this spot. I wondered how could they serve beef in a vegetarian restaurant and that’s when I came to know that it’s not real beef instead, it’s vegan beef. They serve two varieties of vegan beef dishes, namely beef fry and beef stew. The latter contains vegetables like potatoes, green peas, carrots and vegan beef pieces. Vegan beef roast on the other hand is reddish in colour with the use of tomatoes and masalas along with the vegan beef pieces.
Apparently, they make use of Soya beans and other ingredients in making these vegan beef pieces. I have gone for Idiyappam and Appam for breakfast along with the two vegan beef recipes. I have also ordered a freshly fried hot vada and they also have a variety of dosa options like Thattu dosa, Plain dosa, Masala dosa and many more. Just like many other vegetarian restaurants, some of the other popular dishes like Uthappam and Bhatura were also served in this restaurant. Rasavada is another dish which is available in the afternoon and I remembered the instance when we tried delicious Rasavada a few years back from Shri Balaji Tea Stall in Alappuzha.
Vegan Beef stew has a thick gravy and it has a delicious flavour of rich coconut milk with spices. Even though the vegan beef pieces were made of Soya beans and other ingredients, we wouldn’t be reduced just to the taste of Soya beans, there is more to it. It goes really well with Appam and since the shop is so close to the road, we could experience the sound of nearby traffic which might prove to be a slight disturbance. The vegan Beef roast is spicier when compared to the stew recipe and has the taste of tomato which makes this dish delicious. Vinod Cafe also has vegan Biriyani and many people choose this option for lunch.
Although I have gone for these vegan beef dishes for breakfast, most people prefer dosa varieties from the restaurant. These vegan beef dishes would be something quite different from the ones we normally have and it would prove to be a unique experience. Vinod Cafe in Cherthala is a small food spot which can serve 16 to 20 people at the same time. Since it’s close to the road, parking facilities are not available, we would have to find space down the roadside to park our vehicle.
