Restaurants have always been different and unique when we move from one place to another. We can find luxury ones in the cities and if we move towards the villages, we could find budget-friendly hotels serving traditional food. Ravi’s Maicha Hotel in Kasaragod is one such eatery serving tasty traditional food. We were on our way from Kannur to Kasaragod and we saw the road construction works being done using excavators along the roadside. At noon we decided to have lunch at a place called Maicha. That’s when we came to know about Ravi’s Maicha Hotel by the side of the national highway. The food spot is quite famous in these parts of the world for having budget-friendly Kerala meals. Rice will be served with delicious fish curry and chicken curry.
The restaurant has some space available for parking by the roadside. Banana plantations were seen close to the restaurant, adding to the traditional feel of the food spot. When we reached the hotel, one of the ladies who was in charge of cooking looked very busy with fish frying. Different fish varieties which were marinated with masala were placed on a small tawa for frying. Apart from fish fries, the rest of the recipes like Chicken curry, Avial and Fish curries were all prepared and ready to be transferred to convenient vessels for serving.
Meanwhile, I was fascinated to hear the names of the fishes as they were called different names. Apart from Karimeen (Pearlspots) and Chemballi (Red Snapper) which were the same, all other fish varieties had unique names which made it difficult for me to identify. Usually, the lunch will be ready by noontime and we can have the food till 4 pm in the afternoon. In fact, food might get finished early on some days and hence it’s advisable to reach the restaurant before 3 pm to have lunch. The person who owns the restaurant is called by the name Ravi and that’s the reason why the food spot has been given the name Ravi’s Maicha Hotel.
Rice is served traditionally on banana leaves and as I had my lunch, there I saw a family with two kids having their delicious meals sitting just opposite my table. Non-vegetarian recipes like Chicken and fish curry were served over the rice along with Sambar. Some of the vegetable recipes available along with rice were Salad, Thoran, Lemon pickle and Avial. The most fascinating aspect of this restaurant is that the meals served with chicken curry and fish curry would cost us only Rs 50 and this makes it a budget-friendly food spot for the common people. We have also bought a couple of fish fry varieties like Karimeen (Pearlspot) and Chemballi (Red Snapper). Whichever fish fry variety we choose, it would cost us only Rs 50 and it’s been an attractive aspect of this food spot.
Fish varieties which were marinated for frying were not taken for frying at once. Instead, it would be fried depending on the initially fried pieces get finished. This keeps them fresh and helps to remain crispy for the customers. Among the two fish fries I ordered, Chemballi (Red Snapper) is the one I liked the most. Payasam was also available towards the end as a sweetener. On the whole, Ravi’s Maicha Hotel in Kasaragod is one of the very special restaurants by the side of the national highway serving budget-friendly food for lunch. If you are on your way to Kasaragod through the highway, this food spot would prove to be an interesting choice.
