Kerala has been blessed with a huge chunk of street food stores or Thattukada all throughout the state. These small eateries by the side of the road serve you mind-blowing recipe combinations which will surely make you fall in love with these spots. Some of these food items may even stake a claim of not being available through any other eateries. We have made a visit to such a street food spot by the name Rajettante Thattukada in Thrissur located at a place called Ayyanthol Ground. Rajettan is the one who owns the street food kiosk and hence the name Rajettante Thattukada. He was busy with the preparations and in the midst of that, he carved out some time to interact with us about the shop.
The street food store has been in operation for nearly 25 years and the place was crowded when we got there. Nishad was with me and since he is a native of Thrissur, he recommended this spot to me. Out of so many dishes, Kolli (Tapioca) mixed with Chicken parts is one of the main attractions of this street food spot. We can also have Kolli beef, Kolli Botti and Dosa from this eatery as these are also available for the customers. Among these dishes, I ordered Kolli (Tapioca) with Chicken parts and Nishad went for Kolli Botti (Beef intestine) with quail egg curry on top.
A medium-sized iron tawa is used for cooking all these recipes and two varieties of steel spoons are used by Rajettan for mixing the ingredients. As with the case of any other street food store, each of these dishes is served with sliced and chopped onion pieces on top. There were a few chairs available close to the food spot by the roadside, but it was occupied by customers. The light was an issue as it was late evening and we managed to find an auto stand nearby to have a seat. Even though it read not to occupy the resting place for the auto-rickshaw drivers, we used those seats as it was vacant.
The preparation of the dish Kolli (Tapioca) with Chicken parts was quite fascinating and it all starts with an omelette. Cooked and mashed tapioca pieces which were bought from Rajettanβs house were placed over the egg recipe. Fried and roasted chicken parts were added over these and mixed thoroughly with a spatula. A couple of spoons of chicken gravy is poured over this mixture and itβs again blended together to be served with a handful of chopped onion pieces on top. It felt really tasty and had a complimenting spicy flavour which made this dish attractive to the customers.
Nishad had also given great reviews about the Kolli Botti dish. Since we were so close to the road, we would have to bear with the sound of the vehicles passing through the road. As we all know, one of the main aspects of these street food shops is that we can have hot and steaming dishes right away after preparation. Rajettante Thattukada in Thrissur is a pocket-friendly food spot serving delicious dishes. Even though there were only a few dishes on the menu, this small eatery was very well appreciated by the people as it was evident from the number of people having food from the spot.
