Have you ever had an instance in life, where you happen to see a jewel in the midst of somewhere you haven’t planned to be? Such was exactly the case for me, as we find the Nattukozhi Virunthu restaurant in Coimbatore, on our way from Mysore to Kochi. I decided to take a slight deviation on my way from Mysore, to see Bhavanisagar Dam. While continuing my journey from this tourist destination. We happened to see a hotel board with the name Nattukozhi Virunthu at a place called Ganeshapuram. We stopped at this food spot to have our lunch. Apart from their main attraction of Nattukkozhi Biriyani, they have a variety of dishes like Mutton varaval, Mutton Botti varaval and Nattukozhi varaval. I found the quantity to be slightly less when compared to other restaurants.
Tamil Nadu style Nattukozhi (country chicken) Biriyani is served in a medium-sized bowl with a boiled egg on top. Since it’s country chicken, the meat is slightly hard when compared to broiler varieties. Tamil Nadu-style biriyani resembles that of a Pulavu, the ingredients are being cooked together. Biriyani is slightly spicy and the taste of Nattukozhi (country chicken) is giving the rice a unique flavour. They make use of small biriyani rice in its preparation and it’s served with curd salad. But if you like to have meals for lunch, they also serve meals with Parippu and Pappad. While I was having Nattukozhi Biriyani, my friend Sobin opted for Fish fry meals.
Nattukozhi Virunthu in Coimbatore also has some gravies like Mutton Kulambu (curry), Pachapuli Rasam, Tomato Rasam and Nattukozhi Kulambu (curry). I took the chance to have some Mutton Kulambu with the Biriyani. Mutton curry contains some fatty pieces and I kept these pieces away. But, let me tell you something, the Biriyani taste awesome with Mutton Kulambu and it combines well with the Biriyani rice. And when you think of the Parking facility, the restaurant has parking spots available for the customers.
Earlier when we were coming from Mysore, we enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the Bhavanisagar Dam. We parked our car a few metres away. As we were slowly walking towards the dam, we saw a lot of shops selling a variety of fish like Catla, Rohu, Tilapia and African Mushi. These fish were all cleaned, marinated with masala and ready to be fried in oil. While some of these shops offer fish fries alone, others offer rice and fish fries. All these fish might be from the nearby dam. We can also find a long list of shops selling all kinds of dried and salted fish. Also, there were shops selling kid’s toys and bangles, it feels like a festive atmosphere all around the place.
Normally when we travel along the road from Mysore, we will find vast areas of yellow sunflower and orange marigold plantations on either side. Even though I couldn’t find any sunflower fields this time, was fortunate enough to see a vast area of orange-coloured marigold plantation. These flowers look so beautiful and it feels like an endless sea of orange. We stopped for a while and walked around to enjoy the view.
