Madhu Seafood Restaurant in Cherthala for delicious Seafood Meals

When it comes to seafood delicacies in Cherthala, Madhu Seafood restaurant has been a favourite spot for many. The whole list of seafood varieties which you can choose from is one of the main features of this eatery. I have had plans to visit this food spot ever since the Covid days and at last, after a couple of years, we managed to check out this well-known seafood spot. Madhu is the one who is in charge of the shop and he takes care of cutting the washed and cleaned seafood into pieces. He also takes care of the cooking part. In fact, Madhu’s family and friends help him with cooking and this restaurant has become a success through the collective effort of the whole family.

Apparently, the restaurant has started operating near home since the Covid lockdown days, and before that, it was running by the side of the main road. Madhu’s father started the business a long time back and he has taken it to a much more improved state. When we got there, we have seen the marination of sliced Asian sea bass (Kalanji) with a masala prepared of Kashmiri Chilli, crushed Shallots, Black pepper and other ingredients. We have seen the cooking of many seafood varieties on the stove and these include Murrel (Varaal fish), the head of Asian sea bass (Kalanji) and the head of Seer fish (Nenmeen). Murrel fish curry (Varaal) has been made in several vessels and it’s been quite unique to see these Murrel fish cooked in separate vessels rather than using a big vessel.

Madhu’s wife Praseeda is taking care of seafood frying. Simultaneously a variety of seafood recipes are being fried in a series of vessels. It’s the masala which gives the dish the taste. The marinated seafood pieces are then fried with shallots, curry leaves and black pepper to get the real flavour.

There were flies roaming around, looking to place themselves on top of a fish which is cleaned and ready to be cooked. We have seen an employee by the name Gopan who has been with them for 18 years and he was crushing the shallots. Apparently, he has been working with them since the time of Madhu’s father. Rice is cooked in a separate area where firewood is used for its preparation. There I saw the cooking of a vegetable dish, Avial where lots of curry leaves are used to enhance the taste. The restaurant won’t be open on Mondays and it’s been displayed on a small board. Another thing which is written is about smoking and it’s not permitted inside the restaurant.

There is enough space and facilities within the restaurant but since it was noontime, there were more customers and we thought to have the food on the outside. We dined outdoors beneath the bamboo trees. It has a really good ambience to have our food in the company of a slight breeze and the shades of trees. We had our meals with Kalanji Thala curry (Asian sea bass head curry), mashed tapioca (kappa), Chemmeen fry, Kalanji fry, Meen motta fry (fish roa) and many more. Out of all these recipes, I liked the Kappa with Kalanji Thala curry and it was something special. Chemmeen fry (Shimp) is another dish which was so delicious. They also offer a series of vegetable recipes like Avial, Sambar, Ginger recipe, Buttermilk and many more.

Parking facilities are available for the restaurant. There has been a notion that we should park our vehicles far away from the food spot as the nature of our vehicles may determine the price of the recipes. I don’t think it’s the case and to avoid any such incidents, better to enquire about the rates before making the order. Since these seafood prices vary each day from the market and that might result in price variation of the recipes.
