Alappuzha has always been a part of the world where nature has not holdback in bestowing its full beauty. Blessed with backwaters and immense scenic beauty, Alappuzha or Alleppey is known as the Venice of the East. This place is known for its houseboat cruises along the water nerves of western Kerala. Have you had a feeling to visit this master craft from nature, and enjoy the food variety it offers? I will introduce to you one such destination in Alappuzha that you would love to visit, called the Lake View Hotel, located exactly at a place called Krishnankutty Moola. In the backdrop of backwater lakes, beneath the shades of Mango trees and in the company of gusty winds through the waterfronts, you can enjoy the traditional Kuttanad Meals with a long list of backwater dishes to go with them.
Lake View Hotel in Krishnankutty Moola is at the R block of Alappuzha district. We started our journey from an ancestral house beside the backwaters, which has a long history of 100 years. In fact, it is the ancestral home of the Kayal (lake) king ‘Murikkan’. My friend Siby is the one who introduced me to this spot and he took us to the restaurant. We made a speed boat ride along the backwaters to reach the Lake view hotel. On the way, we saw the Kavalam boat jetty where government boats were parked by the side and there is boat service from this area.
The restaurant offers you open-air dining beneath the shade of mango trees, beside the backwater lake. You can see houseboats in the vicinity flowing through backwaters. Kutanad Kerala meal is served on banana leaves with Thoran, Aviyal, Mango pickle, Sambar, Rasam and Pappad. Karimeen (Pearl spot fish) is available in both fried and grilled form (pollichath). Of all the recipes, Chemmeen fry (prawns) is the one I liked the most, as it has an awesome taste. The use of curry leaves and masala makes this a delectable dish. Also, I find mango pickle delicious as its sour taste with spicy chilli flavour makes it beautiful. This goes really well with tapioca. Duck curry is also on the menu. We managed to catch a fish from the backwater, it’s also fried and served with rice. We also had shrimp fry, Tilapia fry and it was tasty.
When you travel through the backwaters, you could see green coconut plantations on either side, waiving us a grand welcome. The natural scenic beauty you could enjoy on a boat ride is something to savour. We also saw a few water lilies and since this wasn’t the flowering season we couldn’t see these in a full-fledged manner. There were some Thamarakozhi (Bronze-winged Jacana) over these water Lili leaves, resting as if to share the stories with these flowers.
Lake View Hotel building resembles that of a house and there is freshwater fish farming nearby. Tilapia is the main variety available. Apparently, it’s the Kerala government’s fish farming initiatives from the fisheries department. We tried to catch the fish using the net, but unfortunately for us since it was noon time we didn’t get any. There are fishing rods available for us and you can hand over your catch, they will cook it as per your wish.
Although this restaurant serves you tasty food, it’s quite difficult to reach Lake view hotel. The contact details are mentioned below and if you feel like visiting the place, you can make a call and enquire about the details. In fact, all of us can reach the hotel through boat services from Kottayam and Alappuzha. From Kottayam, you can catch the boat from Kodimatha at 11:30 am. Meanwhile, from Alappuzha, you can join the boat service from Alappuzha boat jetty by 11:30 am. The place where you should get off the boat to get to this hotel is Krishnankutty Moola.
