If you have any plans to try out some homely food, there is a place in Thrissur which serves you authentic homely meals, and that’s Kavu Hotel. It’s nothing but a house which provides customers with simple Kerala homely meals. You might have wondered why this food spot has been named as Kavu. There is a sacred groves temple (Kavu) or forest temple nearby and that’s what has given the name Kavu. You would need to travel 16 kilometres from Thrissur town to reach this place near Guruvayoor. There are coconut trees all around the food spot. Even though the exact location is given in this post, since it is so far away from Thrissur town, it’s better to make enquiries along the way. This would avoid any confusion with the roads to reach this hotel.
Although we reached the spot around noon time, the restaurant would normally see a rush towards 1 pm. Mallika amma is in charge of cooking and is being helped by her son Sreerup and his family in running this restaurant. It’s been 24 years since starting Kavu Hotel, and it’s quite famous for homely meals. Natural coconut oil is used for all preparations and this gives a traditional feel. Mathi (Sardine) and Ayala (mackerel) were used to make a fish curry for rice. The crushed coconut used in this recipe enhances the flavour. Apparently, the fish varieties may vary each day according to their availability.
Kakka (Clam) roast is another main attraction of this food spot. Sliced and chopped ingredients are added when the crushed garlic pieces got sauteed in coconut oil. Fish fries are another special recipe. Mathi (Sardine) and Ayala (mackerel) were kept for marination with masala for some time. These are then fried in coconut oil to get tasty homemade fish fries to be served with Kerala meals.
There is an interesting thing you should do before having your food. Unlike any other restaurant I have been to, we need to pick a banana leaf of our choice. We then have to wash this leaf in water to get it cleaned. They have been following this method because the customers sometimes were not satisfied with the banana leaves offered. There is a vast area available for parking. Since it’s a budget hotel serving homely food, it gives you a unique ambience. Sundays will be off and the hotel won’t be open on Sundays.
