When you are on the road to Guruvayoor, on a hot summer noon time and if you are searching for a restaurant to have lunch? Idam restaurant in Thrissur would prove to be an amazing choice, as it offers a whole collection of seafood recipes on the menu. Hot steaming Kerala Meals with delicious seafood recipes are the unique feature of this food spot. Idam Restaurant is run by Kannan and it’s located at a place called SN Puram, on the way from Edapally to Guruvayoor. My friend Saju had a very good experience and he is the one who has suggested me to try out this food spot. Well, the food was truly amazing.
Reeja is the main cheff, and when we got there, she was busy with the preparation of coconut milk Mathi (Sardine) curry, which is served with rice. Kodampuli (Malabar Tamarind) is used in this fish curry and it gives a traditional sour flavour. Apart from the main cheff, there are more people working in the kitchen to make these dishes. Different varieties of fish curries using Choora and Kera are also available. Apparently, Munampam harbour is only 13 km away from this place. According to the availability, each morning, they would get around 14 seafood varieties from the harbour. You can have different seafood recipes like Chemmen (Shrimps) roast, Kakka (Clam) roast, koonthal (Squid) roast, Njandu (Crab) roast, Chilli fish curry and many more.
Meanwhile, the Tawa fried fish varieties like Manthal, Karimeen (Pearl Spot) and Ayala (Mackerel) are some of the other attractions of this restaurant. These fish pieces were marinated with masala for quite some time before frying, and that’s what gives them a real flavour. While I was going through the preparation of fish recipes, happen to see a unique wood stove used for making rice. Although it resembles that of a Kuzhimandhi stove, firewood is burned in a cylindrical pit and the top portion is closed by a metal cover. Once the rice is cooked, it’s used for boiling drinking water.
Lunch is served traditionally on banana leaves. We do have a choice for selecting fish fries, as the fish fry varieties are brought to us on a large tray. I choose Manthal fry, Koonthal (squid) and Prawns roast, while my friend Sobin has gone for Sheelavu (Barracuda) fry and Kakka (clam) roast. The soft meat of Manthal (sole fish) along with its masala was awesome. A bottle of salted Bird’s eye chilli was on our table and it’s been a unique experience. If you favour a more spicy taste, then you can take one or two Kanthari (salted bird’s eye chilli) to enhance the spiciness.
Idam restaurant is easily accessible for customers, as it’s located by the side of the main road. The parking facilities are available for the customers and the restaurant has a relatively good ambience.
