For all of us Keralites and even tourists from other countries, a houseboat experience through the backwaters of Kuttanad, Alleppey would be one of the main things to try out in our itinerary. Soaking in the natural beauty of the region we would be gliding on top of a mystic indigenous architectural brilliance called houseboats providing almost all the amenities you could think of in a posh boat voyage. Of course, as with the case of everything else in this world, the more you would be able to spend gets you more features.
The rich green or golden colour paddy fields on the sides of these freshwater holdings provide you with a beautiful view. A houseboat experience in Kuttanad, Alappuzha would be so thrilling that you would always cherish the memories of the natural beauty of the landscape. Coconut trees are another main occupant in these parts of the world which makes this place one to savour.
We have gone for a boat ride through the famous Kuttanad region of Alappuzha and it was nothing less than spectacular. It would prove to be a perfect getaway weekend with your family or friends. We opted for a two-bedroom houseboat owned by Cruise land and the last time when we made our visit, we took the one with 4 bedrooms. I was with my family and friends, and we all found the voyage refreshing and beautiful. Kuttanad is so blessed with its natural scenic background that even when we travel by car, bus or bike can make us lost for words, such is the way nature has bestowed its full powers onto this fascinating place.
The cool breeze hugging the lake’s surface makes you feel calm and relaxed. When we moved through a small river, we saw lush green paddy fields on either side. We have also witnessed numerous houseboats carrying tourists. Apart from that, there were small boats parked at the lakesides, swaying from side to side according to the moments of water.
One of the main attractions of this journey was about a delicious recipe, Vallacurry (boatmen’s curry) which we were able to taste along with meals. It’s been believed that back in the day when people used Kettuvallom boats to transport goods, they had to travel for many days. They used to make this simple fish curry recipe using the fish variety which was caught from the lake. The tasty recipe can be prepared within 20 to 25 minutes and hence the name Vallacurry (boatmen’s curry). Sardines are used for its preparation this time and the delicious dish can be served with tapioca, Jackfruit and meals. Sharath, the chef showed us the preparation of this traditional dish.
As the boat made its way through the freshwater lake, I had some conversations with my friends. My friend Bobit explained a few facts about digital marketing and we had some discussions regarding the matter. At noon, lunch was served with delicious Mathi curry (Sardines) and Karimeen fry (Pearlfish). There were several vegetable dishes served along with rice and the food was very tasty. Vallacurry tasted very nice with boiled rice and it would be even more delicious with tapioca.
I remembered the last time when we made our way to Alappuzha and it was when we had food from the Lake View Hotel in Krishnankutty Moola. Kuttanad would always be a tourist attraction for the world and the houseboat ride would have its say in making this place an attractive proposition for all.
