We would have come across many name boards on the roadside about the places serving homely meals. Most of the time we would have not given any attention to these places and discarded them for famous restaurants. But what if we can get some truly amazing homely meals from some of these places we managed to discard? Hotel Karthyayani in Tanur is one such beautiful food spot serving delicious homely meals. I came to know about this food spot from Google and the route map has taken me to a place from which I had to walk 50m to get to the shop. After parking my car, I took a walk through a narrow alley to get to the hotel which was located in a village area having numerous trees in the vicinity. On the way, we could see coconut plantations on one side and various trees along the way gave a detailed picture of the serene village’s atmosphere.
As we were closing in on the food spot, we understood that the route we took was a small walkway behind the restaurant. The rustic greenery around the food spot gives them quite an intriguing ambience. As we got to the kitchen, we have seen fish pieces being marinated and kept ready for frying. Some of the fish varieties like Ayala (Mackerel), Mathi (Sardines), Choora (Tuna) and Hamour were the prominent ones kept for frying. The lady who took care of the cooking part is called Lilly and the restaurant is named after her mother. Cleaned and marinated chicken pieces were also ready for frying and it’s the only meat variety available in the restaurant.
Apart from the fish varieties and the Chicken, the egg omelette was also served for the customers who seek to have some special dishes along with the rice. The first thing we saw when we got to the restaurant kitchen was the crispy fried pappad being made in coconut oil. On one side of the kitchen, we could see firewood arranged to form a stack. Even though the building was constructed using metal sheets, blue-coloured plastic sheets have been tied over the kitchen to get it covered against the rain.
Fish was shallow fried with very less oil in frying pans and these fresh fish varieties were daily collected from the market according to their availability. Plastic-made dining tables and chairs were present for the customers to have food. As I was about to have lunch, I came across some people who were enjoying their food and they all had great reviews about the restaurant. The homely nature of the food being served in this eatery has made them come to the place.
Lunch is served on steel plates along with a glass of sweet Payasam. Coconut chutney, Avial, Upperi and bilimbi pickle were the vegetable dishes served along with rice. The two gravy options available for the customers to be had with rice were Sambar and Fish curry. Buttermilk and rasam were also placed on the table in a jug. We have made orders for fish fries along with the rice and the taste of rice mixed with the sambar felt exactly like the one which we usually have from our home. Hamour fish fry had real soft meat and the masala used in the dish gives away the real flavour. Coconut oil used for frying the fish made it even more tastier. The food was so delicious and it was quite amazing to have.
Hotel Karthyayani would be an ideal choice for people who are looking to have homely meals in Tanur. If you happen to be on your travel through Tanur, Hotel Karthyayani would surely be an amazing choice for you to have homely meals.
