Eat Kochi Cafe at Fort Kochi for Delectable Seafood Dishes

Have you had a chance to visit Fort Kochi, one of the famous tourist destinations in Kerala? Fort Kochi has many attractions up its sleeve that would make you fall in love with the place. It’s a vast area and you would have lots to explore in this beautiful place. Vasco da Gama Square is one such location in Fort Kochi near the seashore. It’s an ideal place to have a walk in the evening, basking in the picturesque attractions along the way. The location is named after the famed Portuguese sailor Vasco da Gama, who is in fact the first European to lay foot in this place. We made our journey through these beautiful locations and also had tasty seafood dishes from Eat Kochi Cafe at Fort Kochi.

Keralites and Malayalam film lovers won’t forget one prominent character by the name ‘Bilal’ from the movie ‘Big B’, played by famous actor Mammotti. The house at which the film was made is at Vasco da Gama Square in Fort Kochi and it’s apparently a well-known selfie spot for tourists. Since it was locked, we couldn’t look inside the building and people took pictures standing by the famous entrance. Nearby, we can see the oldest European Church in India built in 1503, the St. Francis Church. This church was also renowned as the burial place of Vasco da Gama and later, his remains were taken to Portugal. It’s one of the prominent tourist destinations and a pilgrimage centre for the people.

As we move towards the shore, we can see two huge rusty cylinders. These are nothing but steam boilers used early for ships and cranes in Kochi harbour. Chinese fishing nets by the seaside are another tourist attraction, where fishermen let you lower the net to the sea and you can have an experience of catching the fish by this method. All this involves payment and you can even buy the catch from them.

Vasco da Gama Square in Fort Kochi also has a heritage museum and the building is called by the name Bastion Bungalow. All around the square, you can witness many buildings in European architecture which all contribute to the beauty of this place. When you walk through the busy lane, on either side you can come across numerous street vendors selling crafts, toys, juices, tender coconut and many more. Being at the seaside, we can see a series of seafood vendors and fishermen with a wide range of seafood items on display.

There exists a fascinating feature in Fort Kochi where you can buy seafood from any of these street vendors or fishermen. Later if you get these to Eat Kochi cafe by the roadside, they will cook them for you as you wish. I bought a white Snapper (Vela) and half a kg of Tiger Prawns from a shop. The cafe also has some seafood varieties to choose from. I have opted for fish tawa fry and butter garlic prawns fry. We could see for ourselves the way they apply masala for marination as the kitchen is in the front.

Frying each side of the fish would cost you Rs 250. Fish tawa fry and Prawns were served with sliced vegetables like tomato, cucumber and lemon. The fish was soft and delicious with masala. In fact, it doesn’t include curry leaves and coconut oil. Tawa fry is literally done with little oil and it can be had with Chappati. Prawns butter garlic fry is rich in garlic taste and since it is fresh, it felt really good. The presence of the shell makes it crispy.

The cafe has a menu board in front, so it’s better to enquire about the rates before making the order. Fork Kochi is also famous for Christmas and New year celebrations, and it would be quite fascinating to visit this place during the festive seasons. You could see several pay and park facilities nearby the square, we choose such an option as it’s quite difficult to find a place otherwise.
