We were on the road through Thrissur town on a hot afternoon. We happen to see a small shop by the roadside, Davis Chettante Moru Kada. The main attraction of this street vendor is Buttermilk and boiled egg. The shop is run by a person named Davis and hence the name Davis Chettante Kada. You can have buttermilk with spicy green chilli chutney or you can have simple buttermilk with soda and salt for taste. As you might have heard, buttermilk is an excellent thirst-quenching drink for the hot summer season. The boiled egg is another speciality of this shop, you can have Chicken or duck eggs. An egg will be sliced into two halves, crushed Kanthari (Bird’s eye chilli), Chilli powder, Pepper powder and salt will be applied for taste.
This shop has been open for 42 years and in the early days, this area was full of mango trees. His brother was also in the same business for the first 10 years, but later he moved on from this field. The shop owner remembers the initial years, as he had to pull the shop to the spot, to be open by 11 am. The shop was closed by 5 pm and he pulled it back towards the home in the evening. Nowadays the shop can be open for 24 hours and there won’t be any issues.
A big block of ice is available with the vendor and he is making this at home. If you wish the buttermilk to be cold, he would make small ice pieces from this block and it will be added to the glass of buttermilk. Apart from this buttermilk, you can also have other drinks like Lime juice, Lime soda and Sarbath. We had spicy buttermilk soda with boiled egg and it was truly an amazing experience. Since the shop is at the main roadside, it is accessible for all of us. There is enough space down the roadside to park your vehicle.
