Have you ever been wowed, seeing the way food has been made in a street food joint or Thattu kada? Such was the experience we feel when we get to the Chennai Thattukada or Madurai Thattu Dosai restaurant in Kochi. The energy and the vibrant nature with which Shankar prepares the food in this food spot is so unique for everyone to see. The speed on display in spreading the Dosa batter over the Tawa, and the hand movements he brings in to spray the masala powders are nothing less than spectacular.
One of the main attractions of this street food restaurant is Padayappa Dosa. Shankar was previously working with Chennai Thattukada and we had plans to visit it sometime back. Then we came to know about this shop, Madurai Thattu Dosai located at Thammanam in Kochi, run by the same person. We can read out the names of food items available for us from a long list displayed at the front of the shop. Among those names, the special dishes are marked in red. Some of the popular preparations are Special egg dosa, Padayappa Dosa, Kalakki omelette and Kulamkuthikalakki omelette. Dosa is served with white colour coconut chutney, sambar, onion chilli chutney and tomato chutney.
I was with my family and friends, we made orders for Padayappa Dosa, Special Egg Dosa, Quail egg bullseye Masala Dosa, Egg Burji and Mysore Masala Dosa. My friend Abhilash choose to have Set Dosa and Kalakki which is his favourite. Padayappa is nothing but a very famous Tamil film played by the movie star Rajnikanth. As the name suggests Padayappa Dosa is quite huge and the preparations include several ingredients like an omelette, green chutney, red chutney, tomato masala and Special masala powder. Since it’s quite heavy for me, I decided to share it with my wife. Padayappa dosa is delicious with tomato masala, omelette and masala powder.
Quail egg bullseye masala dosa contains 10 quail eggs and it’s rolled with bullseye inside. Special Egg Dosa doesn’t have any masala and is with the omelette. Mysore masala Dosa is quite different from all other preparations as it doesn’t have any eggs involved. In fact, it contains Beetroot and Potato masala which gives a nice feel.
Meanwhile, Shankar has informed us that he is planning to change the location of the food spot in the near future. The way Shankar makes use of his dancing moves to shift the masala bottle in his hand is something to watch out for. People find it fascinating to see this preparation and it’s quite a rush in the evening to have food from this street food joint. There are chairs arranged by the side of the road nearby the shop and we can have our food close to the restaurant. Since we are in the open, we would need to be mindful of mosquitoes giving us company. You can find space down the side of the road for parking.
