Biriyani has been one of our favourite dishes ever since we could remember. As with the case of any other recipe, Biriyani too has got numerous variations. When we move from one place to another we could see different styles of biriyani, each having a humungous fan following and acceptance from the people. Thalassery Biriyani, Chennai Biriyani, Hyderabadi Biriyani and Mysore Biryani were some of the most sought-after varieties in high demand. We have been on the lookout for a place to get delicious Chennai biriyani in Kochi. Thatβs when I came to know about a homely takeaway centre by the name Chennai Biriyani Center in Kochi serving mouthwatering Chennai Biriyani.
One of my Food N Travel friends has informed me about this place. He had Chennai Biriyani from the shop and he was truly amazed by the delicious flavour of the dish. Hearing what he had to say about the recipe, I decided to make a visit. When I was going to the Chennai Biriyani centre, I had to park the vehicle 100m away from the spot as the road leading to the shop was quite narrow. Two-wheelers would be able to go through and if you are using a four-wheeler, you would have to walk a small distance to get to the place.
The Google map took me to a home and there was a small board towards the front displaying the name of the shop. People who choose to visit this shop tend to get the Biriyani parcelled for home or their workplace. We could see a couple of small tables on either side at the front of the house. This is for the people who choose to have food from the shop. Makesh is the one who is in charge of the shop and he is also the one who takes care of the cooking. He was working a few years ago and due to some health issues, he had to discontinue the job. Later he learned the preparation of Chennai Biriyani from Youtube and since then he is successfully running this homely takeaway centre serving delicious Biriyani dishes. He is also being helped with the cooking by a person from Odisha.
I have witnessed the preparation of Chennai Biriyani which starts with cooking Biriyani rice in a big pan. Another pan is also placed over the stove simultaneously and the spices were sauteed in fresh sunflower oil. Sliced onion pieces, ginger garlic paste and masalas were introduced onto the spices and continuously sauteed with the use of fresh coriander leaves and Pudina leaves. Cleaned and chopped chicken pieces were added for cooking and these were later mixed with fifty per cent cooked biryani rice. The whole of these ingredients was dum-cooked for half an hour on low medium flame to get the hot steaming and delicious Chennai Biriyani dish. I have noticed one speciality in dum cooking as banana leaves were kept at the top of the rice inside the vessel for dum cooking which I felt was quite intriguing.
We can make orders for this Chennai Biriyani through online food delivery platforms like Swiggy and Zomato. As the delivery guys from these online platforms were waiting at the front, I have been asked to have the biriyani at the dining table inside the house. The Chennai biriyani comes with a boiled egg which is kept along with the rice. It is served with salad and brinjal gravy. The latter recipe is one of my favourites and itβs quite commonly served in Tamil Nadu while having a Biriyani. It has a sour flavour from the use of tamarind and it combines well with the biriyani flavour.
Long biriyani rice is used in this preparation and the masala is uniformly distributed all around the rice. It comes in a fairly decent quantity more than enough to satisfy each one of us. The biriyani has a really special flavour and the chicken pieces were amazing to have with the rice. It has an optimum spicy flavour with the rice having the taste of chicken and masala. If you like to have a more spicy flavour, you can have the brinjal gravy along with the rice. We have to take note of one thing that pickle is not served along with the dish.
Chicken 65 is also available and we can have it with rice for an additional taste. In fact, chicken 65 biriyani is also there for us to have an order. These were served with chicken 65 pieces replacing the normal chicken pieces in the biriyani dish. Sundays will have an option for us to buy Mutton biriyani. Moreover, the price of the biriyani looks to be budget friendly when compared with other restaurants. If you are looking to have delicious Chennai biriyani in Kochi, you can very well make an order from the homely takeaway at Chennai Biriyani Center in Kochi.
