Biriyani has been served all across Kerala through restaurants, Bakeries and kiosks. Different varieties of Biriyani are available through these shops and as we move from one place to another we could see the difference in Biriyani preparations. It’s one of the most royal dishes we tend to prepare for special occasions or functions. Biriyani Palace in Kottayam is one such destination which serves delicious Biriyani dishes. We have been informed of this restaurant by people who have tried out this recipe and that made us decide to visit this food spot. The restaurant building looks like an old house design from the outset and there was a small parking area provided towards the front of the food spot.
Chicken biriyani as well as Kada biriyani (Quail) is available for the customers. I choose to have Chicken biriyani and it came in a steel bowl along with papad. Two chicken pieces would be included in a biriyani and the masala beneath the biriyani rice gives away a nice flavour. If you are in need of more masala for the biriyani dish you can very well inform them and they would serve you again. Salad and lemon pickle were also served along with the biriyani for an improved flavour. A boiled egg is also included in the dish. As I tasted the rice with a slice of chicken, the use of essence in the Biriyani was quite evident with the flavour.
It is not quite similar to the flavour of Malabar Biriyani and in fact, biriyani preparations in the Kottayam region tend to use essence for an improved taste. I felt the taste of essence has been slightly high and if it was reduced a little, the real biriyani flavour would have come to the forefront. The chicken pieces were cooked well and the taste of masala has been the real reason for its delicious flavour. I had the boiled egg with the masala and it was really good. Long rice is used in this preparation and the use of fried chicken pieces makes it different from the usual biriyani dish.
Some of us might raise an argument that the use of essence has to be questioned, but the fact of the matter is that Biriyani preparations tend to vary from place to place and each of these varieties has got a massive fan following for the taste it gives away. The pappad served along the biriyani has got a light spicy flavour. It was quite different from the usual Pappad variety we normally have tasted with the biriyani, hence I felt it as a special dish. If you like to have a delicious chicken biriyani for lunch, Biriyani Palace in Kottayam would be a place to look at.
