Kerala has been blessed with delicacies which seem to be available through all kinds of eateries. It can be either from high-end restaurants or even from street food vendors or Thattukadas. As Keralites, we all would have at least one story to narrate about a visit to these Thattukadas. These street food counters throughout the state serve you traditional Kerala own dishes. Ammammayude Thattukada in Thrissur is one such street food vendor besides the Ganam Theater at Valarkavu. This street food is run by an old lady called Savithri and the word Ammamma has the meaning ‘Grandmother’. Hence this small shop is called by the name Ammammayude Thattukada. She is also being helped by a person named Aby, who takes care of the cooking.
Kappa or kolli (Tapioca) and Chapati are the main attractions of this Thattukada. Unlike some other street vendors, Dosa items are not available. Chapati is made by Ammamma herself and it’s served with a variety of dishes made of Chicken, Beef, Mutton and Pork. Kappa Biriyani is the other main attraction of this food spot. Boiled Quail and Chicken eggs are also available for us. I choose to try out Mutton botti kolli (tapioca with Mutton internal parts) and these are mixed with one set of quail eggs, which is apparently ten eggs. Chopped onion pieces are also sprayed over, which gives you a crunchy feeling. Mutton botti kolli has a slightly spicy flavour which made me think of a glass of black tea, as the sugar mixed in the tea would help to reduce the spiciness.
Nishad has ordered Chapati and Mutton head recipe. He seems to like the combination, as the masala used in the Muttonhead recipe goes well with Chapati. We can have food at the spot itself or we can get it packed for home. Light seems to be a problem for people who choose to have food on the spot. Hence we had to move towards the front of the theatre, where there is illumination from the building.
Meanwhile, my friend Abhilash has tried out Beef botti Kolli (tapioca with beef internal parts) and is waiting for Kalakki (half-cooked omelette). In fact, Kalakki is a slightly juicy dish and the use of black pepper powder gives a unique taste. This street food facility has been open for 30 years and the initial years saw Ammamma herself taking care of the food spot. Now there are people around for helping her in running the operations. This street food vendor is available only at dusk and there is space available around for parking.
