Lipsmacking Beef Chaaps and Hot Steamy Puttu for early breakfast from Abida Hotel in Kochi

Have you ever thought of enjoying a very early breakfast, even before the sun comes out of its sleep? I had this idea brewing in my mind for so long and finally, it all came to fruition a few days back when I took my bike to have a ride very early in the morning. Abhilash has also joined me on this journey and we both came to a restaurant close to my house. On the way, we could see lots of people running and walking along the roadsides, carrying on with their usual routines for looking after their health. Abida Hotel in Kochi is where we have come to and apparently, this food spot is quite famous for serving delicious Beef Chaaps and Puttu for breakfast. The area where this eatery is located is exactly towards the heart of a place called Vazhakkala, famous throughout Kerala for filming one of the most sought-after Malayalam serials called Uppum Mulakum on Flowers TV channel.

On my way to the eatery, I recollected the last time when we had Mutton Chaaps from Malappuram at New Badariyya Hotel in Thiroor. It was such an amazing experience and I was hoping to have an even better scenario with Abida Hotel. We reached the hotel before 6 am in the morning and as we were entering the dining area, we could see one person towards the entrance, rigorously working hard to make Parotta for breakfast. This food spot has a very long history to narrate as it started its operations way back in 1961. We have also seen another guy busy with the process of spontaneously shifting the milk mixed with tea powder from one cup to another in a peculiar fashion which is in fact, very common with the process of making tea in these parts of the world.

I took this opportunity to check out the kitchen and I have seen the process of frying one of the snack varieties by the name Savola vada or Onion fritters. Some of the other dishes like Greenpeace and Egg curry were in the final stages of preparation. We have also seen the cooking of the main dish, Beef Chaaps, for which we came in for. Beef has been chopped into pieces which were slightly larger in size and it’s been mixed with sliced onion pieces. This mixture is cooked in a pressure cooker for a few whistles and later transferred to a larger pan containing the masalas for making the Beef Chaaps recipe. The use of grated coconut milk with mashed cashew nuts towards the end is what’s giving the dish the mesmerizing flavour. This recipe is so popular as we have been informed that people were waiting to have this recipe without losing its freshness.

Although I had made up my mind to have Parotta and Beef Chaaps for breakfast, seeing the hot steamy Puttu being served to customers has made me change my decision. The Beef pieces looked so soft as it was cooked in a pressure cooker. The combination of Beef Chaaps with Puttu seems to me as one of the best recipe combinations in the business and it was so delicious to have for breakfast. Abhilash on the other hand hasn’t changed his decision and had Parotta and Beef Chaaps.

I also ordered a Savola Vada or Onion fritter to have at the end and it has not quite reached the height of Puttu and Beef Chaaps. We both had a cup of hot tea towards the end and it was truly awesome. I have seen some customers in the restaurant who were having great reviews about the food spot, some of them visit this place for having Beef Chaaps. The person who was sitting opposite me at the dining table had a long experience with this restaurant as he is a frequent visitor. Everything points to the fact that this eatery is widely accepted among the people. If you are planning to have breakfast very early and would love to have non-vegetarian dishes, Abida Hotel in Kochi would prove to be an interesting choice.
