Have you ever felt confused about what food to choose for breakfast, as you have to select from a whole list of non-vegetarian dishes? In fact, such was the situation for me when we visited the Aalthara Hotel in Thrissur. This famous restaurant is located exactly at Marathakkara in Thrissur, by the side of Ernakulam – Salem National Highway. It’s surrounded by large Banyan trees (Aalmaram) and it looks as if the building is at the foot of these very high trees. Hence, this restaurant is called by the name Aalthara (foot of Banyan tree).
My friend Nishad is a native of Thrissur and he is the one who suggested me this Hotel. When we got there in the morning, we met an elder person named Ambujakshan. He gave us the list of Non-vegetarian recipes which were ready at that time. It was fascinating to know the names of some of these recipes like Duck roast, Rabbit curry, Nadankozhi (country chicken) curry, Beef curry, Mutton Botti (intestine) and liver roast, Prawns roast, Kakka (Squid) Roast, Njandu (Crab) Roast and many more. He even informed us that a few recipes are in the cooking stage and those will be ready shortly.
This is a relatively small food spot with a seating capacity of 20 and is located in a special place. The presence of large Banyan trees is giving it an alluring feel. The person who owns the restaurant is known to everyone as Anibhai. They offer various breakfast dishes like Appam, Idiyappam, Parotta, Puttu, Poori and Chapati. I thought of having Parotta and Beef curry for breakfast, while Nishad ordered Appam and Duck roast. We have also ordered Nadankozhi curry and Mutton Botti (intestine) roast along with a rare recipe called Meen Mutta fried (Fish Roe). The soft and crispy hot steaming parotta was superb with Beef roast and Keralites have a special feeling towards this breakfast combination. I felt like some of the Beef pieces could have been cooked more, but apart from that the food was tasty.
Nishad had great reviews on Appam and Duck roast, he found it delicious. By the time we finished our breakfast, there came the hot tea. The spiciness of these recipes along with the hot tea felt amazing. This foot spot has Meals and Biriyani at noon time. Apparently, they would have around 300 meals per day. For a restaurant with mere 20 seats, you could imagine the rush for lunchtime. Aalthara Hotel opens early at 5 in the morning and it will be closed by 7 pm. Even though they don’t have a specific parking area, you can manage space in the nearby area.
