Have you ever heard of anyone saying the word Chattichor, and if you have any plans to try out traditional kanji? You don’t have to search anymore as delicious Chattichor and Kanji are available at Kanjikada in Thrissur. The shop is beside the Thrissur Corporation Stadium. In front of the shop, we could see a ground where people practice driving for getting a licence. We reached the food spot early at 11:30 am and usually, the rush starts at 12.30 pm.
Kanji is nothing but boiled rice with water. I choose to have Thairu kanji (Curd with rice gruel) and my friend Nishad had gone for Chattichor. Thairu Kanji is served with curd and a group of recipes like Pickle, Unakkameen (salted fish fry), Kadala (chickpeas) and Pappad. Curd served for this Thairu Kanji is mixed with a chutney made of green chillies and shallots which gives an interesting taste. In fact, if it was Kantari (Bird’s eye chilli) in place of green chilly, it would have been more wonderful. Having a spoonful of Kanji with a bite of salted fish fry is something which is so special. One of the fascinating things about this restaurant is that the food is served in small earthen pots and it gives a unique feel.
You can have both cold Pazham Kanji (the previous day’s rice gruel) and hot steaming kanji from this food spot. They also have different varieties of Kanji like Uluva kanji, Kandari kanji, Payaru kanji and Pal kanji. Unfortunately for us since we have gone early, many of these above varieties were not ready for us to have a taste. If you wish to have some special non-veg recipes along with this rice gruel, there is a whole host of dishes like Beef roast, Pork fry, Magic Chicken and Fish fry.
Chattichor is another speciality of this restaurant. Rice is served in earthen pots with whole hosts of recipes placed over the rice. Chattichor comes in three prices starting from Rs 100, 120 and 150. Nishad was having the Rs 120 variant and it involves three non-vegetarian dishes Fish curry, Chicken roast and Beef curry. In addition to these recipes, you will get Pork curry and Omelette for the Rs 150 variant.
In the old days, the fish curry made using Kodampuli (Malabar Tamarind) was prepared in earthen pots. The fish curry will get finished in one or two days, leaving behind its gravy on the sides of these earthen pots. People used to add some rice into these pots and mixed it to have as Chattichor, and it had a fantastic taste. Nowadays, this concept of Chattichor is transformed into a unique recipe served in restaurants.
Kanjikada in Thrissur is a budget-friendly restaurant with a moderate ambience. Parking facilities are available on the ground beside the food spot. Since the shop is located in the Thrissur town area, it’s easily accessible for all of us.
