Many of our homes have been making Chicken, Beef and Fish recipes as prominent non-vegetarian preparations. Chicken seems to be the most popular meat. Widespread acceptance of chicken has to do with its availability and affordable prices compared to all other meat varieties in the market. Pork recipes were usually made on rare occasions and functions. Also, we need to consider that a high percentage of restaurants did not have pork recipes on their menu. Even though this seems to be the scenario in most parts of Kerala, Angamali and Chalakudy are the two major exceptions, as these places were quite famous for serving lip-smacking pork recipes. Octopus Pork Cafe in Chalakudy is a restaurant that serves different types of delicious pork dishes that would attract your attention.
The food spot is located near the north bus stand in Chalakudy. I was informed of this restaurant by my friend Chinku and he had visited this food spot a few days back. He got to the restaurant for dinner and some of the popular recipes like Alfam and Biriyani were available for the customers at that time. Since I was going through Chalakudy, I thought of visiting this food spot to try out some of the pork recipes available through the shop. After parking the vehicle in the space available at the front and as I went inside, I saw a whiteboard displaying the names of the dishes available for that day. I have been to Chalakudy a few times in the past to try out some lip-smacking pork recipes from some of the shops like Vasuvettante Kada and Reghu Chettante Oonu Kada.
After going through the list of items displayed on the board, I took myself to have a seat at the dining table. There I saw a menu on the table with the names of food items served through this restaurant. Although the food spot has some Chinese recipes up its sleeve, I have gone for some of the traditional pork dishes like Pork fry, Pork roast, and Pork ribs roast along with Nool parotta and Bun parotta. After some time a guy came to serve the food items. I enquired with him whether people had asked about the availability of octopus recipes through the shop as it’s been the name given to the shop. Apparently, they have received plenty of such enquiries from customers in the past.
When I was about to have the Nool parotta, there came a special momos dish made of pork. I have tasted one dumbling with the sauce and it was really awesome. Since it was served soon after being cooked, the hotness of the filling inside the steamed momos made me breathe heavily to get it cooled inside my mouth. Momos made of pork were truly wonderful and this restaurant is an ideal place for people who loves to try out some pork dishes.
Nool Parotta tasted really wonderful with pork fry. The meat as well as the fat content of the pork is sauteed and fried perfectly to impart the delicious flavour. Pork has been cooked well and the masala used in the dish has been the main attraction of the recipe.
Since parotta is much suited to have with a gravy recipe, I have gone for the pork roast. It’s a traditional dish containing tomato pieces and sauteed dried chilli. The light tangy flavour comes with the presence of tomato and the subtle sweetness is from the use of onion. The pork pieces were cooked really well, and the use of masala and green chilli gives a light spicy flavour which makes it perfectly good with Nool Parotta, which is more crispy than the normal Parotta preparation.
The restaurant also serves us tasty Kerala meals for lunch along with pork recipes and Angamaly mango curry. Next up, I had Bun Parotta with pork ribs roast which was my favourite among all of the pork recipes I have tried. The spongy nature of the bun parotta mixed with the gravy of pork ribs roast was truly spectacular to have. Towards the end, I had a glass of mint tea which was also really nice.
Abhilash had pork biriyani for lunch, it came with salad and lemon pickle. Briyani also was really good and if you are a person who likes to have pork recipes, then you can try out this food spot with utmost confidence. Octopus Pork Cafe in Chalakudy would prove to be an amazing eatery for having so many different varieties of delicious recipes made of pork.
