We all might have tried out restaurants which were so unknown to us. Such situations normally arise in between a journey and that’s exactly what has happened to us in this instance. We were on our way back from Bangalore and as we were passing through Tamil Nadu, that’s when we thought of searching for a food spot in the vicinity. We came to know about Poolampatti Meen Kadai from Google and decided to pay a visit. Apparently, this food spot is famous for freshwater fish recipes as its located nearby the Kaveri river.
Earlier we reached Hosur in the morning and we had our breakfast. It was a place where the food is taken in a slightly different manner compared to the normal restaurants. We had to stand and have our food. It was not a cosy dining experience and they had a variety of breakfast items like Dosa, Poori, Tomato rice, Idli, Vada and so on. It was a small food spot and was famed for serving yummy Parotta in the evening.
When we reached there, we witnessed the preparation of Dosa and Poori. They also serve a special omelette variety called Kalakki. It’s a simple omelette dish which is soft and juicy inside. I ordered normal Dosa which is served with Chutney and Sambar. Along with Dosa, I took one Kalakki and it was good. My friend on the other hand had ordered Tomato rice and he made great reviews about the dish. The food was served over banana leaves on a plate and upon finishing our food, we ourself have to dispose of the banana leaves which again is something I felt unique. This food spot is slightly away from Hosur as we took a deviation.
We resumed our journey and by noontime, we were passing through the Poolampatti road. That’s when we searched for a restaurant nearby to have our lunch. There I saw a food spot on Google near the Kaveri river serving meals with freshwater fish recipes. The Poolampatti road towards the food spot looks quite fascinating as both sides have lush green vegetation. Refreshing paddy fields and sugarcane plantations occupied the area providing a calming village experience. It’s been quite evident that the water from the Kaveri river is keeping this place alive. The drive along the sides of the river Kaveri itself is a beautiful experience.
We came to a bus stop on the banks of the river Kaveri where we parked our vehicle. The restaurant is seen nearby and there were three to four sets of marinated fish varieties on the outside. Apparently, we can choose any of these for frying and there are options for deep frying in oil and Tawa frying. Sliced Catla pieces and a small fish called by the name Kokku or Koolan are marinated with masala for frying in oil. Apart from these, there are also cube-shaped Tilapia pieces ready to be fried to make the chilli fish. Whole Tilapia is also available and it’s marinated for tawa frying.
We can choose any of these options for having meals. There is a small dining area inside the restaurant. Even though we reached the food spot by 3.00 pm in the afternoon, we saw people having their lunch with their families at this restaurant. They have informed us that it’s ideal to reach the restaurant by 12.30 in the noontime as they would have more fish varieties available for frying.
Rice is served on banana leaves and Meen Kolambu (fish curry) gravy is poured over for a taste. We have ordered chilli fish, Tilapia tawa fry, sliced Catla fry and Koolan fish fry along with meals. All these are served on plates over banana leaves with sliced onion pieces on top. White rice is served in these parts of the world which tastes really well with the Meen Kolambu. The use of tamarind invokes a light sour taste which amplifies the taste. Koolan fish fries have a crunchy nature and the masala used in its preparation is quite amazing. It doesn’t have a much spicy flavour and that makes this dish appealing. Catla fry has a thick masala coating on the outside and the meat is soft on the inside. The masala used is the same and even then, I liked Catla fry the most among all these dishes.
Poolampatti Meen Kadai is a budget-friendly restaurant which is located quite far away from the main highway. The ambience is not as cosy as you might get in a posh restaurant but it gives you a different experience. You would enjoy the beautiful lush green cover on the way towards this restaurant. If you are in the mood to taste freshwater fish recipes, Poolampatti Meen Kadai in Tamil Nadu would prove to be an interesting choice.
